5 Questions with Thor Rixon

Are there any specific artists or genres that have had a significant influence on your music style?

Nicholas Jaar had a big influence on me when I started making dance music as I was very drawn to his approach to sound design and his sense of groove. In recent times I’ve been very influenced by my peers in the very colourful and boundary pushing berlin queer community that is Lunchbox Candy.

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

Claudia, Wilhelm R and Me by Roberto Musci

Are there any artists that you would love to work with in the future?

I’d be a dream to work with DJ Lag, Tyla and any other incredible SA icons. A girl can dream

How much creative freedom do you give yourself in your live sets or do you prefer a more planned/rehearsed approach?

I rehearse and plan like crazy for weeks and months leading up to a season so that when it comes time for the performance I am extremely prepared and can be comfortable enough to improvise and really dig deep into the machines in the moment with the crowd.

What would you like to see more of in the ever changing scene?

I would love to see more inclusivity in the global scene but especially in SA as I feel that it’s quite behind in that regard. It’s moving in that direction, sure but it’s definitely dragging its heels. I wish there were more promoters who shared this vision and pushed things a bit more as it’s up to them in the end. I’d also love to see more live performers in dance music in general. At least one at every event would be amazing
