Roz’s journey from Gqeberha

Roz’s journey from Gqeberha to Cape Town and beyond is a testament to passion, perseverance, and an unrelenting love for music. As featured in Sound Guide, her story delves into her deep connection with house music, her growth as a DJ, and her aspirations for the future.
“My dad was a DJ, so music has always been part of my life,” Roz shares with Sound Guide. Growing up in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), she was immersed in Motown, old-school RnB, and house music. “I started going out around 17, and that’s when I truly discovered the house music scene—PE was even known as the House Capital of South Africa!”
Moving to Cape Town opened new doors. “I attended an initiative at Red Bull Studios for female DJs, where K Faith helped me on the decks—that’s when the bug bit!” While working as a restaurant manager, the pandemic became a turning point. “When COVID hit, I could finally focus on music. I started livestreaming, and before I knew it, DJ Ready D called me from GoodHope FM. That was a catalyst.”
Her career-defining moment came at Wolfkop. “Everything went wrong beforehand, but as soon as I started playing, it all disappeared. People left the lake and filled the dance floor! Some were crying, and the owners of Vetsak even gifted me one, saying my set changed their lives. It was surreal.”
Breaking into Cape Town’s music scene wasn’t easy. “It can be very cliquey, so I moved to Johannesburg, which helped me reach new heights. It was a big call, relying solely on music, but I’m grateful I took that leap.”
Preparation is key to her performances. “I plan my sets a week in advance, dancing in my kitchen to test tracks—if the music doesn’t move me, it won’t move the crowd.” She also prioritizes audience connection. “I make eye contact, read body language, and adapt. I love mixing genres while ensuring the crowd gets what they want.”
Looking ahead, Roz is stepping into production. “I’m co-producing with some incredible artists and excited for what’s next.” She credits her early influences, from Vimo to the Soul Candy crew, as major inspirations.
As Sound Guide highlights, Roz is carving her own path in the electronic music scene, proving that passion and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
