6 Questions With Thor Rixon

6 Questions With Thor Rixon

We recently sat down with Thor Rixon towards the end of his summer tour of S.A to chat about his time here and what we can expect next.

You can have any 3 artists in the studio with you for an hour. Who are they?
TR: Right now I’d have to say Petite Noir, Yaeji & Kaytranada – that would be the most inspiring and fun writing session ever I think.

Who are you listening to at the moment and why?
TR: I’m listening to a lot of varied playlists on spotify right now to be honest, I’ve only recently gotten spotify and enjoying finding new music through playlists – so it’s more collections of music than just one artist specifically. Listening to the ‘global funk’, ‘lo-fi house’, ‘coffee table jazz’ & ‘bedroom pop’ playlists and enjoying them all so much. They are all so well curated so I would highly recommend.

It’s the end of the world. Everything is being destroyed. You have the power to save one record and send it off to space to be preserved for all time. Which one will it be?
TR: It would definitely be St Germain’s Tourist record. It’s a masterpiece in production, sound design and song writing. It takes you on such an incredible journey with each track setting such a strong mood and space. I listen to it often at home as well as playing it out in DJ sets. They always make a dancefloor go crazy. It’s magic.

Do you do anything outside of music that inspires the music you make, and if so, how does it do that?
TR: To be honest, not really. Other music inspires me, as well as musical equipment and instruments. I know that’s a bit of a boring answer but that’s just sadly the truth. I love going out  and discovering an amazing track with some inspiring sounds or production ideas and taking those ideas and making them my own when I get home.

Has your time back in S.A inspired you?                                                                                                                                                                                                      TR: Yeah, it’s been such a beautiful summer in SA. I’ve played a lot of incredible shows and spent a lot of time with friends and family. It’s been wholesome. My heart is very full right now.

What can we expect next from you; are you able to share details?                                                                                                                                                    So I’m heading back to Berlin end of February to start the year that side and get moving on projects and performances that side of the world. I have a collection of tracks and videos coming our over the course of the next few months that I am very excited to share with the world. They’ve been in the pipeline for a while so I’m excited for them to finally see the light of day.

You can catch Thor this month in Cape Town for his last set of gigs before he returns to Berlin.
